Presidency To Probe Nigerians Named In Panama Papers

The senate president, Bukola Saraki, and hispredecessor, David Mark, and other prominent Nigerians may soon be in troubleas the Presidency has ordered the investigation of present and past Nigerian officials named in the Panama Papers scandal. The chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, Sam Saba, confirmed the directive to PREMIUM TIMES.This newspaper had published leaked papers from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonsecca, which were obtained by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. The 2.6 TB files, involving 214,488 entities, exposed incredible secrets of the underworld economy, where a network of banks, law firms and other middlemen utilize shell companies, sometimes to hide illegal wealth.PREMIUM TIMES identified at least 110 Nigerians and companies operating offshore shell companies in tax havens.Mr. Saba said the Presidency forwarded names of some persons mentioned in the Panama Papers, to the agency for investigation.“I want to let you know that government has written to us and given us some names based on what they have been reading and hearing regarding that document,” Mr. Saba said. He said as soon as the #PanamaPapers reporting started, the CCB attempted to get the full leaks until PREMIUM TIMES assisted it by making some details for its scrutiny. Mr. Saba said the CCB, after studying the papers, has questions for some public officers in the country. He would not, however, disclose the names of the affected public officers.“I think it (Panama Papers) is going to be helpful because already we have some questions for certain public officers, which I will not be able to disclose at the moment. Until they finish answering those questions,I may not be able to discuss it,” he said. The CCB boss said the agency took some time to respond because it could not securethe leaked documents.“I tried to access the document via the internet, but I was required to subscribe and pay some money, which I didn’t have,” Mr. Saba said.“That was what stalled our effort at the time. But I later asked my counterpart in theICPC if he was in the picture and he replied in the negative. He, however, advised me to approach PREMIUM TIMES.”Public officers who may be investigated by the CCB.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki Four assets listed in the secret offshore accounts carry Mr. Saraki’s name, but the embattled senate president failed to disclose them in violation of Nigeria’s Code of Conduct law.One of the companies in Mrs. Saraki’s name in Seychelles Island is Sandon Development Limited, a vehicle used in acquiring a property on 8 Whittaker Street, Belgravia, London, in 2012.Another shareholder listed for that company is Babatunde Morakinyo, a long-term personal aide and friend of Mr. Saraki. PREMIUM TIMES confirmed that theassets actually belong to Mr. Saraki, and not his wife, Toyin.Evidence showed that Mrs. Saraki and Mr. Morakinyo were mere fronts and nominee directors holding assets in trust for the Senate president.According to one of the documents obtained by this newspaper, Mr. Sakari, while still Kwara State governor, and describing himself as landlord of 8 Whittaker Street, London and 70 Bourne Street, London, executed a deed granting his tenants license to alter the premises of the properties.A part of the deed reads, “This license is supplemental. The reversion immediately expectant on the determination of the lease is now vested in the landlord.“The unexpired residue of the No. 70 (Bourne Street) lease is still vested in Dr. Saraki and the unexpired residue of the number 8 (Whittaker Street) lease is now vested in the companies.”The deed was “signed, sealed and delivered” by Mr. Saraki on behalf of himself, Sandon Development Limited and Renocon Property Development Limited. It was, however, from Renocon that Mrs. Saraki, posing as owner of Sandon, purportedly bought Number 8 Whittaker Street in July 2011.Both companies belong to Mr. Saraki, but he only used a company owned by him to buy a property from another of his companies.Toyin acted as a front for her husband in the purported transaction. The Sarakis also own Girol Properties Ltd, which was registered on August 25, 2004 (ayear after Mrs. Saraki’s husband became governor) in the British Virgin Island (BVI).Company documents show that Mrs. Sarakiowns 25,000 numbers of shares with a par value of US$ 1,00 each. She was appointed the first and only director of the company.Mrs. Saraki had in a letter to the International Center for Investigative Journalism, ICIJ, denied having a shareholding in Girol Properties. But thisnewspaperfound a document linking her to the firm, as well as another handwritten document suggesting that she was known within Mossack Fonseca as justa nominee director and not the beneficial owner of the company.

Former senate president, David MarkFormer Senate president, David Mark, has links with eight offshore companies in British Virgin Island as shown by the leakeddatabase of Mossack Fonseca. The database showed Mr. Mark is one of Nigeria’s most extensive users of offshore shell companies, while serving as a public official. The companies are Sikera Overseas S.A, Colsan Enterprises Limited, Goldwin Transworld Limited, Hartland Estates Limited, Marlin Holdings Limited, Medley Holdings Limited, Quetta Properties Limited, and Centenary Holdings Limited. In the documents, Mr. Mark was repeatedly marked as a politically exposed person, andat a point the former senate president had to send documents, across to Mossack Fonseca to prove that he was clean. The 68-year-old former military officer spent the last 40 years covered by the investigation largely as public office holder. He is widely seen to be far richer than his legitimate incomes could have provided. He served as military governor of Nigeria’s north-central state of Niger, minister of communications, and later as president of the Nigerian Senate from 2007 to 2015.Mr. Markhas been in the senate since 1999, and remains a senator of the federal republic, representing Benue South Zone in the upper legislative chamber.

Former National Planning Minister, Rasheed GbadamosiA former Minister for National Planning, Rasheed Gbadamosi, owns two expensive and luxurious penthouses in Panama, a notorious tax haven.Mr. Gbadamosi, writer, businessman and bureaucrat, who was recently appointed co-chairman of the Lagos at 50 planning committee, bought the two properties in 2008, while serving as chairman of the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA.He paid a staggering N836.8 million ($2.6 million) for the penthouses located in a swanky tower in Panama.According to the leaks, sometime in early 2008, the former minister approached Gilberto Aleman, a Panamanian real estate broker, to help him secure two posh penthouses owned by Nicolas Corcione, owner of Ciclones Corporation Inc, and Cosmopolitan Corp, the companies under which the properties were registered.Valued at N436,800,000 ($1,365,000.00), Penthouse 1, the first penthouseMr. Gbadamosibought, is located in Ocean Park Tower 2, and consists of a surface area of 537.33 square meters, on floors 35 and 36 of the Tower.

Former Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Funsho KupolokunMr. Kupolokun, 69, is one of the largest shareholders in one of Ghana’s biggest hotels, the Kempinski Accra Hotel, a 269-luxury rooms five-star facility. But a close look at the company’s records will not reveal this fact because in 2013, Mr.Kupolokun, who was head of the NNPC between 2003 and 2007, used a shadowy offshore company registered in Mauritius, aknown tax haven, to hide his shares in the company that owns the hotel. The company, Gold Coast Resorts International Limited, is an entity incorporated in the British Virgins Island in 2006.Details obtained by PREMIUM TIMES from the leaked Mossac Fonseca’s database showed that Mr. Kupolokun became director of Gold Coast Resorts on August 11, 2008 and personally held 17.23 per centshares in the company.

Hydro Plants Boost Electricity Generation To 3,686.3mw

Nigeria has managed to attain electricity generation and supply of 3,686.3MW after several months of blackout occasioned by cut in gas supply to power plants.
It was gathered that the improvement in power supply is as a result of high water level at dams, which enabled the three hydro power plants namely, Jebba (360mw), Shiroro (600mw) and Kanji (440mw) to operate at optimal capacity.
This, notwithstanding, the country’s unutilised power generation due to gas constraint stood at 4,517mw, as at yesterday.
Data from the current daily operational report of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), yesterday, showed, Kainji Hydro with 440mw installed capacity is currently generating 305mw, Jebba with installed capacity of 360mw is working at full capacity. Shiroro with installed capacity of 600mw is generating about 560mw.
Other power plants, which have also contributed significantly to the rise in electricity, are Egbin Steam. With installed capacity of 880mw, it is contributing 407mw. Sapele is generating at full capacity.

Though, the country’s installed capacity stands at 11,165.40mw, the network operational capability remained 5,500mw while peak generation ever attained remained 5,500mw as at February 2016.
For instance, the latest Power Generation Statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics showed that the country’s electricity generation hovered around 1,000mw and 2,000 from June1 to June 2016.
Despite this moderate improvement in power supply, there were days generating companies witnessed total or partial system collapse.
For instance, TCN’s power generation report disclosed that the country witnessed total system collapse on June 28 and partial system collapse on July 10, 2016.
Analysis of the report showed that Afam IV and V Gas Turbines (GT) 1 to 12 have been de-commissioned and scrapped. GT 13 to 16 of the same power plant have been shut down due to blade failure.

Humanity and Religion.

I often see the argument posed by theists, and some atheists, that humanity somehow requires religion to keep from imploding on itself, and taking away religion would lead to widespread chaos and eventually doomsday.

I tend to strongly disagree.

This is a list of ways I think humanity could very likely be better off without religion now (specifically the Abrahamic religions and others with similar doctrines), supported by evidence I've come across.

Without religion:
1. Humanity could get along better. Tribalism is the blanket term to describe the innate human tendency to form alliances and groups against one another. More and more research is showing that tribalism can be overcome, and peace amongst people of different groups can be achieved, the more people are able to see a like-ness in one another. A "you are human just like me, I accept you, I feel comfortable around you".

Religion is a direct obstacle to achieving this like-ness, and it shouldn't be hard to imagine why. Religion teaches millions of people, usually via childhood indoctrination (brainwashing), that because the so-called "creator of the entire universe" said so, they are better, more "holy", more valuable, more moral than other groups of people. This is a perfect recipe for unnecessary tribalistic tendencies. And we see this type of religious tribalism unfolding all over the world, often violently.

Don't get me wrong, tribalism can and does exist in many other forms (racism, imperialism, even people with different tastes in music can form alliances based on that). But what sets religion apart is the fact that it rests upon a firm foundation of fear (of hell), and shielded from criticism in a way other forms of tribalism aren't, making it much harder to overcome.

2. Humanity could better understand the world & universe around us. Since the dawn of scientific & empirical thought, religion has been in direct opposition to a vast amount of scientific progress. No honest person can deny this. When Galileo discovered the earth revolved around the sun and not the other way around, the church wanted him killed because it contradicted the picture the gospels painted of our place in the world. The same goes for the anti-evolution nonsense that still goes on today. People are actively against the foundational theory uniting all biology, for no other reason than that it contradicts the religion they were taught.

Religious indoctrination installs cognitive biases in peoples' minds, causing strong feelings of resistance, anger, hostility and paranoia once they are confronted with certain scientific (& sometimes philosophical) topics that call into question the religious worldview they were indoctrinated with. The anti-intellectual, anti-science mindset that religion births is causing billions of people across the globe to remain centuries behind on a huge chunk of human knowledge. Thus, impeding the scientific & intellectual progress of humanity as a whole.

According to surveys, the countries with the lowest populations of religious people have the highest rates of quality education. It's not always accurate to imply causation from correlation, and the relationship might flow both ways, but it's quite obvious that the more religious someone is, the more unwelcoming of science they're likely to be.

3. Humanity could understand ourselves better. It is true that humans have innate biological insticts that drive much of our behavior. These insticts, as science continues to find, aren't magical but evolved. They helped our species survive, just like every other animals' insticts help it survive. Rather than helping us understand and best navigate our human instincts (like our emotional reactions & sexuality), religion demonizes and mystifies them. It manufactures a ridiculous amount of shame around simply being human.

Religion also, in it's ignorance, has stamped mental disorders with labels like "spiritual invasion" or "demonic posession". Instead of people getting the psychiatric help they need, people are sent to exorcists and other phony religious leaders for "deliverance". Not only does this put lives & minds in danger, but it generates an unnecessary sense of fear and panic around treatable medical conditions, causing people to fundamentally misunderstand their own mental health.

4. Humanity could be more proactive & prosperous. Rather than relying on prayer, which is essentially talking to yourself, people could be more likely to take action towards solving their problems if religion were not a factor in their lives. Again, we see that the most prospering and forward-moving countries have smaller percentages of people who think religiously. Because their societies are based in reason and evidence-based thinking, they are quicker to find workable solutions to economic, political, health, and other issues. Much of the law in the developed world is based on our current understanding of these issues according to research. NOT religious books, which were written by people 2,000 years ago who were quite ignorant in these areas.

5. Humanity could be happier. The biggest reason of all that people give for why people need religion, is that it gives them comfort and hope. When going through a rough time, praying helps people cope. When someone dies, the promise that you'll see them again is soothing. Although I don't deny that religion can serve as an emotional bandaid, or even a vessel for truly healing practices (ex. "giving your troubles up to god" could have the same cognitive effect as "accepting what you can't control and doing your best" ), it is NOT, imo, the only way, let alone the best way, for us to achieve happiness and peace.

As I've mentioned in previous posts, the areas of Neuroscience and Psychology are making some incredible discoveries as of late, uncovering long-awaited answers to our mysterious psyches and how to navigate them. Recent studies show that happiness, contentment, and compassion for onesself and others can be learned & practiced as skills; healing from grief, sorrow, and trauma can be achieved through evidence based psychiatric techniques (including self-directed therapies); and life's obstacles can be surmounted by tapping into proven resources (like a nurturing social environment).

In other words, very good answers to how to be happier, how to get over struggles, how to find peace, are out there. In this day and age, the internet, libraries and bookstores are swarming with this information. With some research into these resources, it should become clear that religion has outlived it's usefulness in this area as well.

So, to conclude, I think that humanity could not only survive without organized religion like the Abrahamic faiths, we could thrive. The children who are raised without the religion across the globe, in areas like the Netherlands, Japan, the Czech Republic, and Iceland, yet become healthy, happy, and functioning members of their societies, are evidence of this. At this point I feel like humanity is clutching on to religion like a child to it's stuffed animal. We don't need it anymore, we just think we do.

3 Nigerians Arrested Over $500k Credit Card Scam In The U.S

Three Nigerian fraudsters including a woman, Maxwell Ezenwa, Christy Tifase and Shalewa Olayinka, have been arrested and charged by the Harris County Sheriff's Office investigators and the United States Postal Inspectors for allegedly perpetrating a massive Credit Card scam that has set back owners to the tune of $500,000, Daily Mail reports.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the trio started the scam in 2014, after investigators began a joint investigation of a group suspected of being involved in fraud in which credit cards were applied without the victims' consent, mailed to the victims, and stolen out of their mail boxes.

The scammers were also said to have registered two business ventures with which they used to process the credit cards for large unusual amounts, and were also able to generate cash from the fraud apps they had created.

Those businesses were identified as Lace Warehouse and African Fashions owned by Maxwell Ezenwa and Lagos Island Café, owned by Christy Tifase, while the losses incurred by the victims of the fraud exceeded $500,000 and dozens of identities were stolen.

Ezwena said to have been arrested previously in a case for fraudulent use of identifying information, although he will now face an additional charge of engaging in organized criminal activity, while Olayinka was arrested on a warrant for engaging in organized criminal activity.

‘my Wife Must Swear In My Village To Prove Her Faithfulness" - Judge Olakunle

A 41-year-old man, James Omale, yesterday, told an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, that his wife must go to his village and swear an oath to proof her fidelity.

Omale, a self-employed, told the court while responding to a divorce suit of a two-year-old marriage filed by his wife, Yetunde, said: “My wife knows that she is guilty of adultery, that is why she is afraid to go to my village to swear. “She left her matrimonial home for a month to an unknown destination. In my tradition, when a woman leaves her matrimonial home and wants to come back, she must first go to our village to swear that no man has slept with her.

“My wife left my house without my consent and when she returned, she refused to go to my village instead, she rushed to court to ask for divorce.” He described his wife as “an ingrate,” saying “I sponsored Yetunde from her 100 level to final year. After her graduation, I lost my banking job and she told me she was not interested in the marriage again.”

Wife’s fears

The petitioner, Yetunde, 29, had filed the suit seeking for the dissolution of the marriage over alleged use of forced by her husband to make her swear an oath. She told the court that her husband asked her to go to his village to make sacrifice.

According to Yetunde, “my husband tells me to travel to his village in Benue State to make a sacrifice and swear to an oath to prove that no other man had slept with me. “He tells me that he always sees a man making love to me in his dream. His elder brother is a herbalist and his wife is currently mad, while his second brother’s wife has been sick for years without the solution. “They cast spell on the wife of his other elder brother who is now a prostitute. I will never be a victim of their evil plan.” The mother of one added: “My husband always leaves the house without my knowledge and he will never care to call me. Because of his bad behaviour, I went to stay in my parent’s house.” The petitioner urged the court to dissolve the marriage because she was no longer in love with the husband. President of the court, Mr. Adegboyega Omilola, adjourned the case to September 6 for judgment.
